The Provincial Heritage Commission, chaired by the territorial delegate of Culture and Sports, Carlos García, has favorably informed the basic project for the rehabilitation and adaptation of the old convent of La Trinidad for use as a cultural center, intermediate provincial archive, and administrative spaces linked to the management of the facilities.
The project, which also encompasses the surroundings of the monastery built between the 15th and 16th centuries and declared a Cultural Interest Site (BIC) in 1985, proposes restoration, conservation, and enhancement actions of the original building, which will accommodate exhibition halls and versatile spaces for scenic, musical, and literary activities around the cloister and the church.
Likewise, the construction of a new building is planned, partially underground below street level, connecting the convent of La Trinidad and the Provincial Historical Archive of Málaga, also declared BIC. This space, spread over two basement floors, will house the Intermediate Provincial Archive, the first of its kind to open in Andalusia.
For the location of the Intermediate Archive, a figure included in the Law of Documents, Archives, and Documentary Heritage of Andalusia from 2011, the slope between the convent and the current Provincial Historical Archive will be utilized, providing a harmonized solution to the space problem for storing documentation.
The public space around the monastery is designed to return to the configuration of the old convent’s orchard, establishing a differentiation of spaces and routes. Thus, at the entrance to the cultural center, the garden and medicinal garden are arranged next to the water sheet that structures the space, while in the northern area, seasonal vegetable species are proposed as a link to the agricultural history of the site.
Since the favorable notification of the basic project, the deadline for submitting the execution project is six months. Once the execution project is submitted, the bidding process for the construction contract can be carried out, following the supervision phase.
